Ceilidh FAQs

A ceilidh is a one-of-a-kind experience that will leave everyone talking long after the party is over. Ceilidh dances are fun and easy to learn, even for people who have never danced before, and the infectious energy of the music will get everyone on the floor!

We’re not just great musicians, we’re ceilidh specialists! With hundreds of ceilidhs under our belts, we understand the delicate dance between tradition and celebration. Our crystal-clear sound fills the room with energy, while Frank, our master caller, reads the crowd and tailors dance choices and pacing to your guests, ensuring everyone joins the revelry. Trust us to turn your ceilidh into a night everyone will remember!

Our band leader, Frank, calls each dance. His humour and clear instructions have a knack for turning even the most hesitant wallflower into a confident ceilidh champion! The ceilidh involves everyone, and there’s something truly special about seeing everyone let loose and celebrating together on the dance floor!

Typically, we’ll ease everyone into the ceilidh spirit with crowd-pleasers like The Gay Gordons, Dashing White Sergeant and the Canadian Barn Dance and follow up with The St Bernard’s Waltz and The Eightsome Reel. After an interval – perhaps for any refreshments you’re planning, or simply to give everyone a break – we’ll rev up the party with even more easy-to-learn gems like the Flying Scotsman and Cumberland Reel. And as a grand finale, no ceilidh is complete without a thrilling Strip the Willow! Of course, this is just a sample set! We’re happy to tailor the dances to your preferences and guests’ experience. If you have some seasoned dancers in the mix we can throw in more challenging reels like the Duke of Perth and Hamilton House, but these are not entry level!

You are welcome to play your own interval music or playlist though our kit. Bring your mobile or iPad, or simply share your Spotify or Apple Music playlist, and we’ll transform our PA into your very own soundstage. However, please bear in mind your overall timings. If you want a recorded playlist after ceilidh dancing, and don’t plan to engage a separate DJ, we are happy to chat in advance about using our PA, but we must factor this into the fee because our team must stay longer to keep your party going!

Most of our gigs are private functions, however we may be able to invite you to come and hear us – so let us know if this is of interest. We have some videos and music tracks online, however, to be honest, our testimonials and repeat bookings are our best advertisement, and we’ll happily put you in touch with some previous and existing clients so you can chat to them direct.

Frank splits his time between his home in Glasgow and a base in East Sussex. Regular band members live in the southeast and others live north of the border, so band gigs tend to centre around London, the Home Counties, and the South of England, and also the central belt of Scotland. We are happy to journey further and play abroad, however travel costs naturally come into play.

We bring professional-grade PA kit and instruments, and travel with a Volvo estate plus a trailer. Easy access and parking at your venue is appreciated! ► On arrival, we need roughly an hour to unload, set-up and do a quick soundcheck. After the ceilidh we need approximately 45 minutes to breakdown. ► For a 4-piece band, a playing space of approximately 12 square metres is ideal; perhaps 3m front to back, and 4 metres wide. We can manage with less, but please chat with us in advance! ► It is a good idea for the band to sit slightly higher than the dance floor, so if the venue has a stage, we’d love to use it. Having said that, we’ve performed many ceilidhs at ground level (!), for instance in marquees. ► We are happy to play “outside”, however, you need to provide weather cover for the band – even in the height of summer it can rain, and electrical kit and water doesn’t mix well. ► Depending on the size of your party, you’ll need plenty of space for your guests to enjoy dancing. Ceilidh dancing is energetic and often involves frantic running around, so the more space you can provide, the better! A useful rule is approximately 1 square metre of dance floor per dancer. Bear in mind some venues may not have accommodated a ceilidh before, so the venue management may think a disco dance floor is sufficient. ► We bring all our own kit – all we need is one standard 13A power socket. ► And while many ceilidh bands typically play in casual clothes, we take special care with presentation, and change into band clothes before playing. Expect a touch of tartan! ► We often travel a distance and stay several hours, and we’re bound to be hungry and thirsty, so please provide some refreshments during the event. We’re certainly not divas and we can simply join in if you provide your guests with some refreshments. As you’ll read in our “meet the band” section, we do occasionally have a vegetarian or vegan band member – but none of us will make a fuss! ► We are very happy to chat with you about any of these practicalities and help you plan a super event – just give Frank a call on 07860 104653 or email web@frankreid.com.

The band carries full public liability insurance, and we have a valid PAT Test Certificate for all our kit.

Our fees reflect the expertise, experience, and quality we bring to your event, and are dependent on several factors, including the date and day of the week, how many in the band, and where the venue is situated. Please give us a call or email to discuss your requirements.

To check band availability take a look at our bookings calendar here, or send an email or call Frank on 07860 104653.
