Amongst the repertoire are firm favourites including Dashing White Sargeant, Eightsome and Foursome, Hamilton House, Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, and, of course, Reel of the 51st Division. Reeling FAQs

We’re not just great musicians, we’re reeling specialists! With literally thousands of Scottish dance events, including numerous Reeling Balls under our belts, we are well-known for providing powerful traditional and modern reeling tunes, and crystal-clear sound. Whether you are planning a grand ball for 500, a special University Cal Soc event, or a private house party for just 25 people, the Frank Reid Band will deliver, no fuss. We regularly play for events organised by London Reels, The Reel Thing, St Andrews Ball, several University Caledonian Societies, and house parties around the south of England. We’ve played at Buckingham Palace too.

The programme is up to you; however, we are typically asked to play The Dashing White to start, perhaps a Reel of the 51st and Hamilton House, with an Eightsome and Foursome to follow. The Duke of Perth, Mairi’s Wedding, and Inverness Country Dance are also popular, and we often end with another Reel of the 51st as a grand finale. We are happy to play a Scottish Waltz, and we have a Rock n’ Roll and disco playlist on Spotify if you wish to include an interlude.

We would not expect to call dances for a reeling evening, however Frank is happy to act as Master of Ceremonies, announce each dance, and discreetly supervise timings. Alternatively, your own host can MC the evening and we’ll simply provide the tunes!

For an unforgettable reeling event, consider adding the magic of a bagpiper! If your budget allows, a welcoming piper can set the tone, and we can also feature a piper in the band for a few dances during the evening. Let Frank help you design the perfect piping package for your reeling ball.

If you need a mid-evening break and fancy a short burst of rock n roll or the latest hits, we have Spotify playlists set up and ready to go. Alternatively, bring your own mobile or iPad (or share your Spotify/Apple playlist) and we’ll connect you to our PA.

We bring all our own kit, including professional-grade PA and some stage lighting. All we need is one 13A power socket.

Frank splits his time between his home in Glasgow and a base in East Sussex. Regular band members live in the southeast and others live north of the border, so band gigs tend to centre around London, the Home Counties, and the South of England, and also the central belt of Scotland. We are happy to journey further and play abroad, however travel costs naturally come into play.

We bring professional-grade PA kit and instruments, and travel with a Volvo estate plus a trailer. Easy access and parking at your venue is appreciated! ► For house parties and private reeling events we need roughly an hour to unload, set-up and do a quick soundcheck, however, for the bigger reeling balls we tend to arrive earlier as we often have more musicians and kit to organise. After the event we need approximately 45 to 60 minutes to breakdown. ► For a 4-piece band, a playing space of approximately 12 square metres is ideal; perhaps 3m front to back, and 4 metres wide. We need a larger space for 5 or more musicians, and if we have a piper joining us. ► It is a good idea for the band to sit higher than the dance floor, so if the venue has a stage, we’d love to use it. Having said that, we’ve performed many times at ground level (!), for instance for house parties or in marquees. ► We are happy to play “outside”, however, you need to provide weather cover for the band – even in the height of summer it can rain, and electrical kit and water doesn’t mix well. ► You are no doubt aware you’ll need plenty of space for your guests to enjoy reeling. A useful rule is approximately 1 square metre of dance floor per reeler. ► Please note, while many dance bands typically play in casual clothes, we take special care with presentation, and change into band clothes before playing, so expect a touch of tartan! ► We often travel a distance and stay several hours, and we’re bound to be hungry and thirsty, so please provide some refreshments during your event. We’re certainly not divas and we can simply join in if you intend to provide your guests with refreshments. If not, please prepare something to keep us happy! As you’ll read in our “meet the band” section, we do occasionally have a vegetarian or vegan band member – but rest assured none of us will make a fuss! ► We are happy to chat with you about any of these practicalities and help you plan a super event – just give Frank a call on 07860 104653 or email

The band carries full public liability insurance, and we have a valid PAT Test Certificate for all our kit.

Our fees reflect the expertise, experience, and quality we bring to your event, and are dependent on several factors, including the date and day of the week, how many in the band, and where the venue is situated. Please give us a call or email to discuss your requirements.
